Museums
literature and memorial museum of N. OstrovskyLet’s continue our small travel about the city. Let’s visit the literature and memorial museum of N. Ostrovsky (Russian writer). This house was built as a present of the USSR government to Nickolai Alekseevitch Ostrovsky. N. A. Ostrovsky took up his residence here on the 17th of May of 1936 after 8 years of living in Sochi in various, often not fit for lodging in flats. In spring of 1935 by initiative of chairman Central Committee of Party Petrovsky it was decided to build in Sochi a dacha, convenient for Nickolai Ostrovsky.
The “family” part of the house consists of rooms of mother, sister, dining room, kitchen and hall. The writer’s part of the house is represented by a cabinet, secretarial room, verandah, hall and his wife’s room on the second floor. The lot for the house was chosen by Ostrovsky’s mother. It was situated not far from the central part of the city, but was quite far from noisy resort highway. “Everything was made in such way that I can work quietly, - Nickolai Alekseevitch informed his friends. – I feel here influence of careful and gentle hand of my Motherland”. The primary fond of the museum numbers 18 thousand of exhibits. The museum works from 9.00 to 19.00. The last Tuesday of every month is a cleanup day. Address: Korchagin street, 4.
Museum-studio of the Bedraks familyVladimir and Eugene Bedrak, artists of applied art, members of Union of Russian artists, founded a unique museum-studio in Sochi. In the museum there is a rich collection of water-colour, paintings, drawing, works of applied art – matreshkas, tilting dolls, Easter eggs, caskets and brooches. The constant exposition covers a period from 18 century till the modern art and is represented by such names as V. Makovsky, M. Klodt, L. Lagorio, P. Konchalovsky, S. Gerasimov, P. Viljams, I. Mashkov, S. Nekritin, N. Andronov, D. Zhilinsky. Temporary exhibitions, dedicated to the art of individual artists, Artistic Unions, representing collections of state and private collections, are arranged every month. In the museum there is also an artistic salon where one may buy works of art and various articles and souvenirs. Address: Platanovaya street, 15.
House-museum of V. BarsovaThe museum is situated in the small private residence of singer Barsova, built in 1947 in Moresque style. A comfortable chamber hall of Barsova’s home theater, admitting 50 persons, with wonderful acoustics, unique exhibits of the beginning of 20 century, a memorial drawing-room with furniture of 1940-1950, rich gramophone record library of the singer’s records. Here V. Barsova used to live in summer and autumn during 20 years. In 1967 she willed her dacha to Sochi. Address: Chernomorskaya street, 8.
Art-gallery of wooden figuresThis museum numbers about 400 exhibits! This fabulous museum consists of several halls. Going upstairs, passing from one hall into the other one, one wonders more and more: how various these “vivid” wooden figures are, how perfect and unique they are.
This collection is made of local sorts of trees. Variety of halls delights every visitor of this museum. “Hall of woman love” abounds in various silhouettes of graceful and wonderful woman figures. Such compositions as “Sergiy Radonezhsky”, “Mary Magdalena”, “Jesus Christ”, and peculiar vision of “Trinity” are also represented.
In the Art-gallery you will see also excellent “Hall of masks”. Having entered the other hall you will see “Wonderful grace”, “Man-rain”, going upstairs, you will find yourself in the hall with “Magnificent priestess”, “The last kiss of Cleopatra”, and pay your attention on composition “United by fate”, where two halves of our “Ego” unite. In this gallery it is a peculiar atmosphere of quietness, which is comparable with nothing else, you should feel it. And workers of this wonderful gallery always hope that every man, who was here even only once, will take away with him something close to him, something inmost and desired. The Art-gallery works daily from 10.00 to 20.00.
Artistic Museum of SochiIt occupies one of the most beautiful buildings of the city. It is impossible to visit the city and not pay attention to it. The building was built in 1936, at first here official establishments were settled, and 20 years ago in the building the museum was lodged. The museum keeps a unique collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, decorative-applied art of 18-20 centuries. Besides that, the museum arranges exhibitions of modern masters’ works.
One of the last exhibitions - “Magic of feminity” in the creative work of K. Rudakov and M. Sokolov from S. Kononenko’s collection; “Ingot” in the creative work of artists V. Preverzev (Sochi) and D. Simonov (Saint-Petersburg); “For the first time together”, the classics and up-to-dateness from funds of the museum - is devoted to 30-anniversary from the day of its opening.
Exhibition of wax figures “Christ’s life” attracts attention very much. The figures represent scenes from the Bible. Unique icon of 18 century “Vision of lad Bartholomew” is also represented in the museum.
Constant exhibitions are also arranged in the building of the museum. Museum “Nook phyto-fantasy”It is situated at the Winter theater. It was founded by an outstanding master of landscape architecture Sergei Venchegov. Its compositions always strangely combined the most variable things. Roots of old trees adjoined with subtropical plants. Flowers are blossoming out right on the bracket-funguses. Lianas of ivy twine round cactuses. All these seem to be unreal, fabulous.
The museum works daily from 10.00 to 16.00. It is situated on Teatralnaya street, 2 near the private entrance into “Winter theater”.
Museum of the history of city-resort SochiThe museum was founded in 1920. It numbers unique collection of monuments of the history of the city since ancient times till the present. In the funds of the museum there are over 80 thousand historical things. The museum arranges exhibitions: “Archeological monuments of Sochi region”, “The nature of Western Caucasus”, “Cosmonauts in Sochi”. In 2006 there will be very many interesting exhibitions.

A cycle of measures, dedicated to the Victory Day “Not sparing own life”. Doors Open Day for participants of the Great Patriotic War. Exhibition “Traveling in the world of the museum” is arranged for the youngest visitors in the day of knowledge in September.
Theaters and concert hallsIt is worth for theatre-lovers to visit Winter theater. The Winter theater has no its own permanent troupe, however the best theatrical, musical, chorographical, popular collectives of Russia. Every year it receives Open Russian and International film festival “Kinotavr”. Since 1993 the Philharmonic Society of Sochi arranges here the International jazz festival once in two years.
Hall of organ and chamber musicHall of organ and chamber music admits 350 people. An organ is set in 1986. Concerts of musical cycles: “Musical transit”, “The Classics and modernity”, “Musical Olymp, “Divertisment”, - are arranged, dimensioned musical compositions – cantatas, masses, oratorios. Repertoire palette of Chamber chore is many-sided. In the programs of concert performances: wind, opera music, chorus classic, operetta, folk song, jazz. Musical subscriptions for children and young people are arranged every year from October to April.
Concert hall “Festival”Concert hall “Festival” admits 2,500 people. Not only the stage but also the sea and lights of sea liners, passing by, pleasure boats and star horizon are well seen from its seats. The hall is equipped with modern equipment and technique. In the spacious foyer there is a café, bars, buffets.
Music in hand of the best symphonic orchestras of Russia sounds under the vault of “Festival”, the famous popular performers of the country and foreign guests perform here. In the small hall, admitting 300 persons, there is a night club, discos; entertaining show-programs are arranged.
Theater of fashion “Mini-maxi”Theater of fashion “Mini-maxi” of Sochi has become popular for the last few years. Formerly it was founded for demonstration of modern clothes. But it was not enough for actresses of the theater, they turned all their performs into small plays, rather naughty, rather moving. Most of all spectators like staging of play “Russia”, during which viewing of new clothes collection is offered for spectators. Address of the theater: Gorky street, 43.
CinemasNow let’s visit cinemas. Cinema “Sputnik” is the largest and the most famous in the city. Seven-channel format Dolby Digital surround EX allows to find oneself in the very center of the events of any film. Licensed films for the widest circle of spectators are demonstrated here. Cinema “Premiere” is the most modern cinema with digital image and system of sounds of the latest generation DVD Dolby Digital. Here the best films of the world movie. It is an excellent sight and unusual sound. Nearness of the screen creates such home atmosphere that people want to come here again and again. In the hall there is a video bar. Water parks
Water park “Mayak” (“Lighthouse”)The central water park of Sochi was opened on the 18th of 2000. It is situated in the center of the city near the marine passenger terminal. It has a great number of water side-shows. There are 10 slides for adults (“Kamikaze” and others), a children’s community with various slides. On the territory of the water park there are cafes “Laguna” and “Priboi”, children’s café “Slastena”. The water park works from May to October from 10.00 to 19.00 without a break, seven days a week.
Water park “Sputnik”Water park “Sputnik” is built on the territory of youth center “Sputnik”. Here there are water chutes, cascades of pools – chaise longues for rest, light tables of cafés, one may order juice or ice-cream.
Sailing center of SochiBuilding of yacht-club began in 1978. The harbor was put into operation on May of 1979 and building of the club was completed by Spring of 1980.
Before 1993 the club was called “Training center in sailing sport of picked teams of Russia”. At present the club includes: sports schools for children and young people of Olympic reserve, hotel, admitting 90 persons, sports hall with training apparatuses, saunas, harbor, admitting 60 sailing vessels with elevators. The length of the berthage of the harbor is 330 m, depth at the walls of the berth is 2.2 – 4 m, depth of the harbor – 3-4 m. One may hire a yacht for an hour or two and make a trip on it!
DolphinariumColorful water shows are arranged in the special play pool which is situated on the territory of union “Adler-resort” in Adler. Black sea dolphins and fur seals, sea-canary and beluga, northern sea lion participate in them. Under the direction of animal trainer they perform unique tricks, dance, sing and even…paint.
Most of all children like it. Go with them there, make a real holiday for them. Also you were told about the Black sea: seize, water color, streams, choppiness, connection with the ocean, chemical water analyses of the Black sea.
In summer performs are arranged four times a day, and in winter – once a week. Address: Adler, resort city.
AperyThe apery is situated in settlement Gumaria, on the southern outskirts of Adler. Here thare are monkeys, participating in the experiments scientists of Sochi institute of medicine primatology, - marmosets and macaque of different kinds. One may see all dwellers of “monkey’s city” in the special open-air cages, they are always glad guests, especially children. You’ll listen to an interesting story about monkey’s life.
CircusWe all like circus from our childhood. We wait or coming of a new troupe as a holiday. And we see aerialists transfixed, laugh at jokes and ridiculous behaviors of a clown. The Sochi circus is not an exception.
Sochi is a city with rich circus traditions. Such stars of circus art as Oleg Popov, Igor Kio, Jury Kuklachev, Jury Nikulin and many others performed here in different years. Now the troup of the circus is headed by the famous animal trainer, national artist of Russia Mstislav Zapashny. The best circus artists of Russia come here during resort season. Besides that the building of the circus itself is interesting. A group of architects was awarded to the State premium of the USSR in 1971. Address of the circus: Deputatskaya street, 8.
Festivals and fairs IX regional festival-contest of army songs “For Faith! For Fatherland! For Love!” will be arranged from 4 to 9 April of 2006 in the Winter theater. The festival was founded in 1998.
Army conscripts, soldiers and retire officers, cadets of secondary and higher military educational institutions, representatives of other power-departments (Ministry of Internal Affairs, Federal Security Service of Russia, customs and others) participate in the festival.
The festival-contest is dedicated to 60-anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Festival “Kinotavr” Festival “Kinotavr” begins in Sochi early in June. Competitive demonstrations of Russian and foreign films, made during a previous year, are arranged in the Winter theater and the cinema hall of hotel “Zhemchuzhina”.
Besides that meetings with actors are arranged in various Sochi cinemas, resort clubs, parks at the same time. As the night falls, a huge screen stretches, chairs are set in Teatralnaya square and one may see here the best festival films absolutely free.
The festival – a content of children’s cinema “Konotavrik” – is arranged for little spectators. In 2005 “Kinotavrik” was 5 years old. The age is not already infantine but quite conscious and though he's yet a long way from being mature, childish frankness and fascinating fervour becomes the little festival very much.
Festival “The “Velvet” Season”Festival “The “Velvet” Season” opens in the resort city in the middle of October. The best artists – modelers and modern clothes producers of various Russian cities - meet at the sea at these days. The festival lasts 7 days. By tradition president of the festival, the famous modeler Vyacheslav Zaitsev, represents spectators his new collection prêt-a-porter “Secret of harmony”.
Discos. Clubs, casinos , bowling-clubsCertainly besides these traditional exhibitions and festivals in Sochi there are also several casinos for lovers of games of hazard. Best of them are “Tsezar-Palas”, “Lazurnaya”, “Pharaon”. In each casino there is a roulette, card-tables for poker and black-jack, game machines. In casino bars works, night show-programs are arranged. Casinos work from 19.00 to 5.00.
In the very center of the city there is a bowling-club “Bombardir”, where lovers of playing skittles, or as they say, rolling balls, gather. Six first-class tracks for playing bowling are equipped, there are instructors who will quickly teach you this game. Here there are also several billiard-tables, a bar, a disco-hall with show-programs. The club works from 12.00 to 4.00. Address: Vorovskaya street, 41.
The most popular disco clubs in Sochi are “The eighth sky”, “Ultra”, “Crew-2000”. Many young people gather in them and sprightly disc-jockeys let nobody to have a tedious time till the morning. Restaurant “Katyusha”Restaurant “Katyusha”is one of the most popular restaurants in Sochi. Comfortable interior, variety of dishes of European and Eastern cuisine, real music and show-ballet. Tavern “Dios’ The interior is stylized as a real piratic tavern: three windows - illuminators with fishing nets, chairs – oaken pipes, beams on chains, ropes, hanging lamps in form of steering control and living parrot. Meal is served in the earthenware crockery and wine – in the earthenware jug. Signature dishes are chickens by piratic recipe, soup by seaman recipe with shrimps and soup with mussel. Restaurant “Lubava”Restaurant “Lubava”: windows of the restaurant open a wonderful view of the city and the sea. “Mother Rosa”“Mother Rosa”: a piece of Italy in the center of Sochi – comfortable tables, red wine and ocean of pizza, which is prepared before one’s eyes, - 16 sorts of pizza from various nooks of the Apennines peninsula. “Zolotoi petushok” (“Golden cockerel”)“Zolotoi petushok” (“Golden cockerel”) is situated on the territory of Sochi brewery plant and is one of the oldest brasserie in the city. Always rich assortment of cold beer: “Baltika ¹ 7”, “Sibirskaya korona”, “Yantarnoe”, “Keller Buyer”, “Akhtuba”.
If you prefer breakfast, dinner or romantic supper in the open air picnic-tours will suite you. For example, an area of arrangement is Navalishensky canyon, a valley of the eastern Khosta river, in 15 km from the Khosta. The restaurant is situated in the shadow of thousand-year yews and box-trees, in the outlet of the river from the lime canyon.
