The Bolshoi Theater

Red square
Formerly Red square was called in other way. At first it was called Torg (in English Market), because it served as a place of lively trading. Then, in 16 century the square was called Troitsky – by church Troitsa, which was situated in its southern part (now this church doesn’t exist). And only since 17 century the square has had the present name. The word “red” formerly meant “beautiful”. Perhaps, everybody will agree that the square justifies its name.

The Tretjakov State Gallery

Contemporaries delighted Tretjakov’s natural intellect and particular taste. He bought pictures often regardless of critics’ opinions, prohibition of censorship, pressure of recognized authorities. If the work appeared at Tretjakov, then for artists it was equivalent to public recognition. He enjoyed special confidence of painters; he was the first whom they showed their new works in studios or at exhibitions, often on the eve of opening day.

Historical State Museum

The museum was opened in 1883, in it the largest number of exhibits (4.5 mln), belonging to the history of Russian peoples, were collected. In this place, where historical museum was built, formerly the building, where in the first years after its foundation Moscow university was situated, had been situated.
