Walks about Sochi: Arboretum and Riviera
Park ArboretumEvery tourist, traveling in any area of Big Sochi should obligatorily make a trip into the center of the city. The most famous Park Arboretum is the best place for family rest and absorbing walks. Area of the Arboretum is quite large – about 50 ha. Over 200 kinds of plants from all over the world adopted in this heavenly nook. Powerful Himalayan cedar, Atlas and Cork oaks, Japanese euonymus and Mexican quince, Californian coquito palm, Australian eucalyptus and Brazilian araucaria, - all feel here wonderful like at home. Only here one can see various forms of cactuses, stroll in the real Indo-Chinese bamboo thickets.
If you find out yourself in the park in spring, it is quite possible that you will become a tremendous sight – blossoming of Indian lilac, centenary Japanese wisteria and numerous decorative tropical plants. Image of fabulous forest is intensified by birds. The whole park is divided into two parts – Upper and Lower. It is possible to get from one into the other through the pedestrian subway.
It is recommended to visit them separately as the Upper park is much larger than the Lower one. In the rosarium one can see various sorts of wonderful roses of native and foreign selection, blossoming from yearly spring till late autumn. Lotuses, water-lilies, papyruses please look in the basins of the park.
Upper park is situated on the slope of the mountain. Numerous paths ramify from the central entry in different sides. One can walk on any of them, they all are interconnected. The primary alley will lead you to S. N. Hudyakov’s estate, which has become a base of the present arboretum. Journalist and publisher, a man of wide interests, Hudyakov wanted to contribute to the future of the country. He managed to do it because the park is visited by tens thousand tourists and numerous foreigners.
Viewing points, arbours, fountains: “Fairy Tale”, “Tsarina swan”, numerous decorative vases of marble, copper, gypsum, - all these fit the whole view of the park.
The arboretum is interesting as a classical example of harmony of small architectural forms where plants play the main role. Perhaps nobody will fail to be moved after visiting refined s if air “Moresque arbor which is guarded by bronze lions. A cave grotto always attracts children. By tradition visitors throw coins from a small bridge at the waterfall into water to turn back here.
The primary riches in the Arboretum are a collection of rare exotica plants. For example, Giant sequoia from California. It quite justifies its name, reaching really gigantic seizes and longevity. These giants live up to 300 years. Relic plants such as common yew and Metasequoia are found. Only a few time ago Metasequoia was considered to be extinct about 60 million years ago. However in the 40-s of 20 century in China only a few such trees were found out. Seeds were gathered from these ancient representatives and now this relic exists in few botanical gardens of the world.
Paths and stairs gradually rise to the upper boundary of the park. Here there is a wonderful viewing point which opens a beautiful view of Sochi, being buried in verdure of gardens and parks all the year round, and sparkling sea mirror-like surface to the very horizon. Here on the top there is a tower of the cable way and funicular operates.
The Lower park is planned in the absolutely level place and its trees and decorative bushes represent the flora of temperate climatic zone. Here there are many shady alleys. Maples, chestnuts, liquidambars, fir trees and numerous flowers at their feet. On the lakes small houses for swans and ducks are set. This place is always crowded.
Don’t forget to take some bread for snow-white beautiful swans and their variegated rival – drakes. Ducks take their seats along the river crossing the whole park. In the closed open-air cages coon and otter dwell.
It’s impossible to pass by a unique construction, attracting visitors’ attention. It is a sea aquarium. Its dwellers are up to 27 species of fish of the Black sea. On the depth as if specially disguised as pebbles flounder and dangerous dogfish lie. Shoals of young fishes frolic in the fragments of the ancient toy frigate. This is the busiest place in the Lower park. There are many visitors with children. Here it is good in any season. Those who want to get something for memory about the arboretum, may buy color booklets or nice knick-knackeries of valuable sorts of trees.

Park RivieraPar “Riviera” is a beloved place of rest for tourists and citizens. It is situated in the very center of the city and is buried in verdure and flowers. Here there are summer cinema and concert, sports and dancing grounds. A shooting-gallery, side-shows, a chess pavilion, a library, bars, cafes. In summer you can admire ìíîãîöâåòüå of flavoured rosebushes and find refuge in the cool shadow of fir and chestnut alleys, and in winter – to enjoy aroma of needles, blossoming magnolias. The park is situated on the left bank of the river of Sochi, not far from the sea and the Riviera bridge in the western part of Kurortniy prospect.
In 1883 Basil Alekseevitch Khludov bought here small lot of 930 dessiatinas. First active stubbing of the forest and building of a dacha were carrying out, and in 1898 a park was laid here. Taking into consideration climate of Sochi, firs, cedars, junipers, cypress were preferred while planting. Then Khludov sold its state to the municipal chamber, which declared park a public park of rest in 1902. In 1937 the park acquired the status of a park of culture and rest “Riviera”. Arboretum composition of the park numbers 240 kinds and forms of trees and bushes.
Various side-shows were built for children. One of side-shows, popular among both adults and children, is a big dipper, where from bird’s flight height one can see the sea, mountains, the center of the city and also strict geometrical forms of flower-beds and alleys of “Riviera” park. In the park there are few ponds. One of them has the form of the Black sea in miniature.
One of sights of the park is “polyana Druzhbi” (“glade of Friendship”). It was founded in 1960. By tradition every honorary guest of the city gets acquires the right to plant a magnolia here. As the result in the alley and the park one can see trees, which had been planted by famous guests of the city, state and social and political figures, outstanding people of the world. Magnolia is a large-flowered, evergreen plant, living for up to 500 years, blossoms by large white flowers, and white color symbolizes peace and friendship of the peoples of many countries. Magnolia blossoms in cold season, often – in December, January, after the first snow. Light snowflakes easily slide down from smooth green leafs, like skiers – from the mountain tops.
Aroma of flowers only swells with moisture rise. Flaws scatter it for many kilometers. It is so delightful that the famous writer Paustovsky, traveling by streamer along the Caucasian coasts, sensing smell of blossoming magnolias, landed and lived in Sukhumi.
In park “Riviera” it is possible now to drink love, wash oneself with it and bring it in glass to a friend. In 2005 fountain of “Love” was built. It works only for a couple. A fountain with drinking water is a new sight from series about love. Never mind how strange it is, it won’t be possible to sake one’s thirst without hands. There is only uncomfortable thing – water flows down right to and on feet.
In the center of the alley there is a marble bench of unusual form which was set in the park not long ago. It is called “Bench of Reconciliation”. It is a very symbolic place for meetings of squabbled lovers. “Riviera” is famous also for its Alley of Writers. From the left and from the right – busts of the great Russian writers: Pushkin, Nekrasov, Dostoevsky and many others.

“Tree of friendship”: a small park of citrus plants in the best way possible reflects striving of the city for uniting in a unified harmonious society, all peoples of the world. On one tree you will find growing lemons, oranges, grapefruit and mandarins.
Birth of the garden dates back to 1934. In 1934 scientist P. M. Zorin planted a little tree of wild lemon for getting new frost-resisting sorts of citrus plants. He inoculated its crown with Japanese mandarins, Spanish oranges, Chinese kumquats, Italian lemons, grapefruits and others – in all 45 kinds and sorts of citrus plants. The famous arctic researcher O. J. Schmidt engrafted the tree in memory of his visiting of the garden in 1940. In 1957 three Vietnamese doctors suggested to call this unique tree-garden a tree of friendship.
At present branches, engrafted by representatives of 167 countries of the world, plant on it. In all it was engrafted over 630 times. The engraftings were made by hands of heads of many states, outstanding public and political figures, cosmonauts, scientists and representatives of culture.
Near the Tree of Friendship another 6- young trees of friendship grow. They were planted by people of different countries and professions. In the garden there are trees from the USA, Poland, Canada, Japan and other countries.
A museum was opened by initiative of continuator of Zorin’s business, Ludmila Makarovna Dmitrienko, in 1981. Its exhibits are presents of people of different countries of the world to the Tree of Friendship. These are national souvenirs, letters, fotos, relics, various musical instruments, coins, badges, caskets with ground from memorable and historical places. In all the museum numbers over 20,000 of presents from all continents of the world.

Be attentive: Oleander is a bush with beautiful flowers of pink, white and crimson color. Its leafs, bark, wood and juice are mortally poisonous!!! In Sochi this decorative plant grows everywhere. Look after your children: they like pluck beautiful flowers and take them into their mouth. Remember, that even juice of Oleander flower is poisonous!!!
